Born in San Matteo della Decima, Gaetano Gandolfi was initially taught by his older brother, Ubaldo. At the age of 17, he enrolled in the Accademia Clementina. In 1760, he spent a year in Venice, studying the works of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and other Venetian masters. Gandolfi later settled in Bologna where he became one of the leading painters of the second half of the 18th Century.
