This pastel is characteristic of the artist’s imaginary landscapes which were executed while he and his family were visiting Santa Cruz, California, in the summer of 1973. In the immediate interior of the California Coast were mountains, hills and deserts. The subject of the dry, “desiccated” landscape, found in the series of oil paintings entitled “Clay Lake” (and “Clay Fountains”) all flow from this newly experienced landscape realized in the pastels executed that summer.
